Throwback Thursday: Rob Zombie - Dragula

Oh shit. I had basically forgotten that this song ever existed, so I went pretty apeshit when I randomly heard it being played on a rock station down in Baltimore while clicking through the channels.

The version they played was the original single, which was accompanied by this bad-ass music video back in 1998 (which I don't think I ever saw all the way through until tonight, just little snippets from the album commercial they used to play on TV when I was kid. P.S. Remember album commercials?)

The version I remember most fondly though was the remixed cut used on The Matrix Original Soundtrack. I remember not really understanding "studio magic" at that time, so I was always amazed that Rob Zombie could hold out that note on "dieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" for like 16 bars straight without taking a breath. Little did I know it was just a cool effect.

Anyway, this song is the shit, and Rob Zombie is a crazy, brilliant bastard. You would never see a guy like this breakthrough into the mainstream today.

Throwback Thursday: Jay-Z "Can I Get A..."

So I've decided to scale back on the Throwback Thursday and Freestyle Friday posts because, to be honest, I'm completely overwhelmed with music projects at the moment. Putting together The Revival album with Kafka, working on a new EP for Phalynx, different feature spots I signed on to do, etc. But, when I hear an old favorite tune or a vicious freestyle, I'll definitely post about it. Without further adieu, a classic hip-hop record that I heard on the radio the other day...

Ja Rule's greatest contribution to hip-hop? Perhaps. Although, I haven't listened to "Holla Holla" in a long time, either.

Throwback Thursday: Soulja Slim ft. Juvenile - Slow Motion

I was reminded of this song when T.I. made reference to it in his new single with Lil Wayne. I think it's called "Ball." It was then that I decided to make this forgotten classic my Throwback of the week. Then, this past weekend, through some bizarre serendipity, I heard "Slow Motion" on the radio down in Baltimore. Yup. It was an omen. R.I.P. Soulja Slim. This song was a rare example of 2000's-era Southern rap done right.
